Tele-Coaching Agreement

This document sets forth the terms and conditions of my services to you.  It also provides an acknowledgement and acceptance by you of those terms.  You should read it carefully and raise any questions or concerns that you have before you agree to these terms.

The services to be provided by Joshua Coleman, Ph.D. are coaching or tele-coaching, as described more fully below.  Tele-coaching includes the practice of consultation and education using interactive audio, video, and/or data communications.

Fees for coaching sessions must be paid upfront unless an alternative arrangement is agreed to in writing.  Cancellations made with less than 24 hours notice will be charged at the full rate unless I am able to fill the time that I have set aside for you.

You understand that I am engaged in coaching and not psychotherapy.  As a result, you will in all likelihood be unable to submit bills to your healthcare insurance provider.

Coaching & Psychotherapy

In addition to being a coach, I am also a licensed psychologist in California with training and experience in diagnosing and treating emotional problems.  While there are some similarities between coaching and psychotherapy, they are very different activities, and it is important that you understand the differences between them.

Both coaching and psychotherapy utilize knowledge of human behavior, motivation and behavioral change, and interactive counseling techniques.  The major differences are in the goals, focus, and level of professional responsibility.

The focus of coaching is on the development and implementation of strategies to reach client-identified goals of enhanced performance, interpersonal relationships, and personal satisfaction.

Coaching may address specific personal projects or issues.  I specialize in parent-child conflicts and provide coaching designed to heal such conflicts.

In contrast, the primary focus of psychotherapy is identification, diagnosis, and treatment of mental and nervous disorders.  The goals include alleviating symptoms and changing dysfunctional behaviors that are a result of these disorders.

I do not provide both roles of psychotherapist and coach with a client, whether concurrently or sequentially.  If either of us recognize that you have a problem that would benefit from psychotherapeutic intervention, I will attempt to refer you to appropriate resources.

Confidentiality

It is impossible to guarantee the protection of information that is transmitted electronically.  By entering into this agreement, you are consenting to the use of electronic communication between us via unencrypted mediums.

Sessions may be sometimes conducted in a family or group format.  You commit yourself to maintaining the confidentiality of all information communicated to you by other coaching clients and by me.   Information disclosed to me during the course of my coaching, while generally confidential, may be subject to mandatory confidentiality exceptions, including reporting child, elder, and dependent adult abuse; or reporting of expressed threats of violence toward an identifiable victim.

I also understand that I may benefit from tele-coaching, but results cannot be guaranteed or assured.
