Here Are Some Questions and Answers Parents Find Helpful

Here are some questions and answers parents find helpful:

SHOULD I PREPARE IN ADVANCE AND EMAIL MY BACKGROUND INFO?

I prefer to get all of the info in the initial consul, though happy to review any documents after we meet.

TYPICAL NUMBER OF SESSIONS:

For most parents, 1-2 sessions are typically enough for me to diagnose the problem and make recommendations about strategies.

WILL YOU MEET WITH MY ADULT CHILD AND ME?

Yes, if they are willing but my schedule doesn’t allow ongoing sessions, only 1-3 sessions typically.

IS THERE AN EXTRA CHARGE FOR YOU WRITE TO AN AMENDS LETTER FOR ME TO SEND TO MY CHILD?

Typically no, unless I need to spend time reviewing emails, legal documents, lengthy correspondence, etc. In that case, I pro-rate the time at $995 per 45 mins.

WILL YOU REACH OUT TO MY ESTRANGED ADULT CHILD?

Yes, I will do it over email if I believe that it’s in your best interest.

IS THERE AN EXTRA CHARGE FOR YOUR REACHING OUT TO THE CHILD OVER EMAIL?

No but if I have a session with him or her that is charged at the rate of $995 per 45 min session.

HOW OFTEN DOES THE ADULT CHILD RESPOND TO YOU?

Roughly 60% of estranged adult children write back.

Of that 60%, roughly 20% say they’re not interested, another 20% write a lengthy response and say they’re not willing to do more and the remaining 60% are willing to get on the phone with me.

Of those who do, I typically am able to get them to agree to a few family sessions with the parent and me, though of course, I can’t guarantee that outcome.

Here are some of the other questions we’ll be considering:

  • What challenges did you face raising your child? For example, was there a divorce, parental alienation, drugs or alcohol problems on the part of either parent or the child?
*How about learning disabilities, Asperger's syndrome, ADD or ADHD, depression, or anxiety?
*Was the child adopted? If so, have they reunited with the birth parent or parents?

  • Was your child overly dependent, anxious, or needy?

  • How much is the son-in-law or daughter-in-law a factor in the estrangement? What is the history of the relationship between the parent and the DIL or SIL? What is the relationship between you and the parents of the DIL or SIL?

  • What attempts have you made thus far to reach out to your child?

  • Do you have recent correspondence that you can forward to me so that I can get a feel for their personality or the nature of their complaints?

  • Have you written an amends letter and can you forward me a copy for review after our initial consult?

  • What was your childhood like?

  • If you are married, what has your marriage been like to your child’s parent?

  • If you are divorced, what age was your child or children at the time of the divorce? What was the custody arrangement? How did your child react to the divorce?

  • What is your current relationship with your ex? Do you believe that your ex has intentionally hurt your relationship with your child?

  •  Are there other significant players in your estrangement such as your siblings, parents, friends, or your other children?

The fee is $995. I will also provide a year of email support after the consult to help you respond to your child’s emails, requests, or correspondence.
